Self portraits allow you to discover a different part of yourself. Each time I sat down in front of this piece, I was transported into a realm in which my mind could wonder into the depths of itself. A few months into this piece, I lost the desire to keep exploring, so I gave it a rest. If I don’t have a deadline I feel no need to force a piece to come.
One night I had a dream. I was sitting in my studio painting this magnificent being, with the tiniest of brushes. I made one final stroke on the cheek of this woman, sat back in my chair, and suddenly I watched the piece evolve. From a painting to a living breathing earthling. Her eyes glimmered with life. She ran her fingers through her hair and played with the butterflies dangling from her ears - she was alive and I was witnessing the moment she came to be. She looked at me and said, “That took you long enough,” and I woke up. From that moment and to today, I remember the way she looked at me and how she gave me what I needed to finish the piece - vision.
